Indian English Teacher Screening and Hiring Process in Malaysia

Malaysia Education Ministry assured that a study of whether English Teachers from India are suitable to teach locally before hiring them.

This is planned in accordance to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s suggestion of hiring English Teachers from India during his meeting with India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has called for a study on the proposal to recruit teachers from India saying it would need to access the teacher’s background, expertise and qualifications.

National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) president Hashim Adnan said discussions must be carried out with experts, NUTP and the Education Ministry to ensure this is a profitable move.

The plan was to add to an implemented programme by the United States’ Fullbright Foundation and Malaysia-American Commission on Educational Exchange to station English Teaching Assistants from the US at selected schools.

Hashim suggested retired English teachers to be recruited as they have necessary experience to teach local students. He also said mixing teachers would burden he students and the national education system.
