English A Compulsory Pass Subject In SPM

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said government is planning to make English a compulsory pass subject in SPM when teachers and students are ready.

This is one of the measures to improve the command of English among students. Currently student must pass Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah (from 2013) to get an overall pass in SPM. Students must get a credit in Bahasa Melayu to get First Grade.

A report presented in parliament last year revealed that some 72,000 graduates throughout the country were unemployed due to poor command in English.

Malaysia’s leading job portal Jobstreet carries out annual survey among employers to find out the reason for unemployment among graduates and the top reason every year is poor command of English.
